If you live in Nigeria, you will most likely agree that the current weather situation in the country is one that encourages a good night’s rest. The cool night breeze lulls you to sleep and you hardly even notice the lack of power supply even when it happens. For some people though, a good sleep is something they don’t have the luxury of for different reasons. This could be due to work stress, keeping late nights or the need to wake up early in order to beat the traffic. The effects of lack of sleep on the body goes beyond the groggy feeling you might wake up with in the long run and it is important that we pay more attention to how much rest we get and our sleep pattern. There are several symptoms that should easily alert you to possible dangers to your health but when in doubt you should always talk to your doctor. A little self-education is also paramount so we don’t take our health for granted.

But missing out on the recommended 7 to 9 hours of shut-eye nightly does more than make you feel groggy and grumpy. The long term effects of sleep deprivation are real. It drains your mental abilities and puts your physical health at real risk. Science has linked poor slumber with all kinds of health problems, from weight gain to a weakened immune system. Sleep Loss Dumbs You: Sleep plays a critical role in thinking and learning. Lack of sleep hurts these cognitive processes in many ways. First, it impairs attention, alertness, concentration, reasoning, and problem solving. This makes it more difficult to learn efficiently. Second, during the night, various sleep cycles play a role in “consolidating” memories in the mind. If you don’t get enough sleep, you won’t be able to remember what you learned and experienced during the day.
Sleep Deprivation Leads To Serious Health Issues: Diseases such as heart problems, stroke, diabetes, heart failure have been to lack of sleep. According to some estimates, 90% of people with insomnia — a sleep disorder characterised by trouble falling and staying asleep — also have another health condition
Low Sex Drive: Sleep specialists say that sleep-deprived men and women report lower libidos and less interest in sex. Depleted energy, sleepiness, and increased tension may be largely to blame.
Lack Of Sleep Ages Your Skin: Most people have experienced sallow skin and puffy eyes after a few nights of missed sleep. But it turns out that chronic sleep loss can lead to lackluster skin, fine lines, and dark circles under the eyes.
