I promise this is not a spoiler alert! Okay…maybe a little.
Last night’s Game Of Thrones episode was a valuable reminder that Game of Thrones is still the same thing it always was: a show that loves to mess with you. At first, it seemed like Varys might be the next fan-favorite on the chopping block, as he finally comes face-to-face with Daenerys who he tried to assassinate. Varys may be as treacherous as Littlefinger, but his intentions appear to be purer than the majority of players in this game.
Then the merciless Queen Cersei turns to the oldest and most reliable trick in the book to turn her reluctant allies to her cause – fear of the foreigner. And she’s got pretty sizeable strategy for dealing with Daenery’s dragon trio. Emphasis on the sizeable!
Good old Samwell Tarly and Jorah Mormont are an unlikely pairing, but a fun one; Jorah’s world-weariness contrasts wonderfully with Sam’s wide-eyed enthusiasm, and brings a touch of humor to a gruesome scene. Sam use of dreadful knives are both gruesome and an act of kindness.
Jon Snow’s heart may be in the right place, but he again proves he knows nothing, by leaving Winterfell in the hands of Sansa, whose idea of a role model is walking weapon of mass destruction, Queen Cersei. But before he begins his quest to seek Dragon glass, there was pretty satisfactory confrontation with Little Finger.
Arya Stark learns of her brother’s victory over Ramsay from old friend Hot Pie. After everything she’s seen and done, she can’t quite believe that anything good could ever happen to her family ever again. There was also another reunion with a dire wolf. But no nostalgia was compared to the heartbreak we felt with the battle on the seas. Spoiler Alert: There were a couple of deaths!
